The rental market in these parts isn’t as plentiful as you would hope, but there are more than enough apartments to house every student who moves off campus every year looking for a place of their own. The problem is, the apartment for you may not be in Ashland. Nearby Medford has a lot more apartments to offer, and what you lose with convenience and distance you gain in variety. The prices in the two areas are comparable, with Medford finishing a hundred or so dollars more expensive on average. But overall, the longer commute and the ability to be selective are the difference makers, not the apartment costs. The most alluring thought of going to school on the west coast is just that: the coast. SOU is pretty far from the ocean, though, so it’s not exactly feasible to make the trip out there often. Students could probably make a couple trips a month, or maybe once a week if they’re dedicated. And I wouldn’t really fault them if they were--the drive out there is spectacular, as Route 199 weaves past the Siskiyou and Klamath National Forests and through the Jedidiah Smith Redwood State Park. And when you exit the woods you’ll be on the beautiful northern coast of California, with the Pacific Ocean laid out in front of you. Some students find things to do locally, but those who make this trip are never disappointed.
