At Portland State, the problem doesn’t lie in whether there’s any public transportation nearby, but rather which form of public transit you want to use. At its downtown location, there are ten rail stations within three blocks, and a bus stop on almost every block of the main streets. These are great ways to commute for students, but others resort to biking and walking; two means of getting around that are popular in downtown Portland. This city is more environmentally conscious than most, and as such a lot of residents take advantage of carless commuting.

Like most downtown areas of large cities, Portland’s has one of the highest crime rates in the city. More specifically, this area contains I-405 to the Northwest District, but once you get past there you’ll find safer neighborhoods like Willamette Heights and Linnton, and same thing for south of I-405, where communities like Marquam Hill and Portland Heights have lower crime than average. Downtown Portland is closest to PSU, but be weary that you may see more crime in the area than in neighborhoods that are further away.
