Crime & Safety
Off Campus Housing Assistance - Real Estate Agent
The Syracuse campus has a high crime rate compared to other parts of the city, but most of these crimes aren’t serious (violent) crimes. If you look at the reports, you will probably see incidents stemming from parties or minor crimes like petty theft. Living on-campus is safe, as any of the students could tell you. As for neighboring communities, you don’t need to give them the benefit of the doubt; Eastside (directly east of campus) is one of the top-five safest parts of Syracuse, and Downtown to the northeast of campus is arguably the safest. If you’re looking to live off-campus, I would look in these areas. Or, the neighborhoods near Le Moyne College to the east are generally safe as well.
Recreation

Syracuse is terribly cold in the winter, with temperatures below freezing nearly every day. Despite this, there aren’t many college campuses that are more fun in the winter than Syracuse’s. Much of this is because the school has one of the best Division I basketball teams in the country, and the team receives incredible support from students. Instead of staying in their dorms or apartments to stay warm or study, students always come out in droves for games and party hard after significant victories. And when the team advances deep into March Madness, the campus goes into a frenzy. Even if you don’t follow sports, you will love the energetic atmosphere when the teams are doing well (other Division I sports also have a strong following here). The school is just a mile away from downtown Syracuse, which offers a lot for students to do as well.
