Syracuse has a very high crime rate, but the neighborhood of De Witt, where Le Moyne is, is a little bit safer. It is located near a bad neighborhood, and students quickly become acquainted to the presence of police officers. Like most colleges, Le Moyne has a nightly shuttle service for students who don’t want to travel alone, and emergency telephones. There were several forcible sex offenses in 2011 on campus, as well as in residential facilities. There are a fair amount of drug and alcohol violations reported, but on-campus arrests are very rare.

On campus there are many school-sponsored events, most notable the annual Dolphy Day. Throughout the year, several events take place in De Witt. Free concerts are held outdoors every Thursday night in the summer at Ryder Park, and on the first Saturday in August, Canal Day is held. Canal Day is a family-oriented festival with crafts, games, vendors, and fireworks. Every year before October, De Witt hosts a “Howling Hayride” for some Halloween-themed fun for children. For children, there is also a Youth Fishing Derby each year, as well as a Track and Field competition for 9 to 14-year-olds who want to compete. Weekly there are lots of free events open to the public, like Table Tennis, art workshops, and holiday lunches. Each year, De Witt also holds over 50+ events through its Recreation Generation program, such as trips to see musicals or travel Vermont.
