Newark is home to many big events throughout the year. The Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival is a four-day poetry festival, the biggest in North America, though in recent years it has struggled financially. In 2006, 16,000 people attended, but in October 2012, only 11,000 people attended. The Festival Director blames the economy. Each spring in Newark is the McDonald’s Gospelfest, which draws over 80,000 auditions, and includes hundreds of performers. The Portugal Day Festival happens each year around June 10, with a parade, prizes, and a street festival. Other Newark festivals include the Cherry Blossom Festival, Lincoln Park Music Festival, Black Film Festival, Sarah Vaughan Jazz Festival, Brazilian Independence Day Festival, and Open Doors. The New Jersey Devils also play their hockey games in Newark.
