WSU’s campus is located in a region of Detroit that has a higher crime rate than the city’s average, with exception to the Woodward Ave/Putnam Street area next to the campus (it has the second lowest crime rate in the city). If you lived in a nearby apartment you probably wouldn’t feel safe walking back at night after a long day of class. I would say the safest part of the city for students is Southwestern Detroit, particularly on Michigan Ave/Military Street or in the Fort Wayne neighborhood. The only problem is, this community is a bit far from campus, and may not be worth the longer commute.

Wayne State has enough campus activities and parties to keep students occupied, but for those who want to explore there’s a lot to see in the area. Downtown Detroit is just two miles away from campus, and for the more daring, the Canadian border is four miles away. Immediately beyond it is Windsor, which is a fun city to spend a weekend or two in. Wayne State is also within walking distance of the Detroit River, which flows into St. Clair Lake (ten miles from campus). Hanging out by the river banks and the lakeshore is a popular activity for students when it’s warm out.
