Economy and Jobs

Landon Gallagher - Real Estate Broker

The ideal landing spot for grads looking for a job is Detroit. The city is just ten miles from UM-Dearborn, so the transition would be very simple--students could even keep their college apartments if they wished to do so. But beyond that, Detroit is on the rebound. The recession hit the city harder than nearly anywhere else in the country, and for a long while unemployment was at an all-time high and a solution didn’t appear to be in sight. But recently, the community and the government have combined to help repair the city and create jobs. The economy still isn’t where it could be, but it’s clear that in the future it will meet, if not exceed, expectations. For the first time in a long time I would recommend grads to look for jobs in Detroit after they leave Dearborn.

Everyone knows that Chicago’s nickname is the Windy City, but I think that Detroit is just as deserving. The wind that rolls off of Lake St. Clair sends a chill through the city during the winter, and it can be felt as far as Dearborn. Students dread early morning classes in the winter; waking up early isn’t even the problem, it’s how the cold breeze greets them as they power walk through campus. As painful as the gusts can be in freezing temperatures, they are admittedly refreshing in the summer when the temperatures reach the high 80s or 90s. But if you’re a student here from fall to spring, this won’t be a consolation to you, and you’ll just have to grin and bear it through the winter as you curse the cold on your way to class.
