Portland, overall, is a safe place. The areas near the City Center have the highest crime rates, like the stretch of coastline around Maine College of Art, Marginal Way, and Park Ave. Many people avoid Cumberland Ave and Preble Street. Some safer places to live include Brighton Corner, East End, Munjoy Hill, the West End, the areas around Deering High School, Nasons Corner, and many other locations. The area of Portland where USM is located is very close to some sketchy areas, but its campus itself is fairly safe. At USM, in recent years there have been only thefts on-campus, and liquor- and drug-violations off-campus. The Portland campus is extremely safe and all students feel very secure. There have been rumors of ghosts however...

Portland is home to SO many annual events! Harvest on the Harbor is Portland’s Food & Wine Festival, though participating in tastings is a bit expensive. The Portland Maine Film Festival occurs each fall, the Annual Old Port Festival happens downtown in June, with a parade, live music, rides, games, performers, and food. The Sidewalk Art Festival is a huge art festival, the biggest in the Northeast, which draws over 40,000 visitors. All of downtown is cleared of cars, and tons of artists set up their exhibits. The Picnic Music & Arts Festival, the following week after the Sidewalk Art Festival, is geared toward a younger audience, with arts and crafts, clothes and jewelry vendors, and live indie music.
