Students ask me all the time if there’s a difference between renting in Urbana and Champaign, and the truth is that there is, but it’s slight. On average, the rental prices in Urbana are $100-200 cheaper per month than Champaign. But to be fair, averages don’t mean everything. Champaign has hundreds more apartments than Urbana, and in my opinion this may even give you more flexibility to find a deal than in Urbana. There are so many ways of looking at it--my advice is simple: take a look at the rental markets in both areas, and find a place that you like and is affordable. Don’t worry about the location, unless there is a marked advantage to living in one over the other because of where your classes are located. Essentially, focus on the apartments alone, not the cities.

While most of the country’s economy was still experiencing the Recession’s lows in 2010-11, Champaign-Urbana added a several hundred private sector jobs and actually lowered their unemployment rate by a couple percentage rates. This growth has only increased, and today Champaign is becoming a hotbed for tech/software companies, with offices for giants like IBM, Yahoo!, and Intel, along with smaller companies. These businesses love hiring graduates out of UIUC, and there aren’t many better places to get a tech job in the Midwest.
