Going to school in Hilo will make you feel like you’re living in paradise, and not just because of the beautiful scenery and weather. The crime rate here is very low, and students should be able to feel safe when they leave their dorm or apartment. The safest part of Hilo is the western half in the Wainaku area. But that’s more inland, and there aren’t as many apartments there. If you’re looking for a spot close to school with a lot of rentals, check out Hoolaulea Street/Hookano Street.

If you casually browse the listings in Hilo, you’ll be shocked at how many monthly price tags exceed $1000. Some of the more expensive apartments can even approach $2000, which is unquestionably out of most students’ budgets. Fortunately, the university has a list on their website of popular realtors, and a list where landlords and other students can post cheap student apartments for rent. If you look on this list and at sites like MyApartmentMap, you will definitely be able to find student deals that stay in the triple digits.
