In October 2012, the unemployment rate in Fort Lauderdale was about 7.8%. The economy in this city is closely tied to tourism, and more specifically, boating and yachts. About 110,000 jobs in Broward County are boating industry-related jobs. Nearly 42,000 boats are moored year-round in Fort Lauderdale, and there are over 100 marinas. The biggest employers specifically in Fort Lauderdale are the North Shore Medical Center, American Express, and Motorola. Despite the homeless population, the unemployment rate is not worse than the average American city, though Fort Lauderdale in particular is a more expensive place to live than your average American city.
