Within a mile of Howard University there are three subway stops: Columbia Heights, U Street, and Shaw. All three of these stations provide access to both the city’s Green and Yellow lines. Howard’s students clearly embrace public transportation: only 15% of them have a car with them on campus. When you factor the handful of buses that swing by the campus, there really are a lot of public transit options for Howard students. And this is all without mentioning the 85 (or “very walkable”) score the campus received on Walk Score, which shows that a lot of students travel by foot.

Demographics

Demographics

The student body at Howard, a historically black college, is mostly African-American, but there is also a large Hispanic population. American Indian, Caucasian, and Asian students also make up small slices of the student body as well. The majority of the student body is female (70%), and 30% are male. Almost the entire population (97%) is out-of-state, and the most popular major is journalism. Students here live in an urban setting with a diverse population, which is one of the reasons why Howard is one of the best schools in the region.
