Downtown Palo Alto has a lot of great shops and restaurants that are perfect for a first dinner date with the girl or guy that sits in front of you in your Calculus class, a filling brunch after a night spent at college parties, or a classy lunch for when your parents visit. Of course, the locals know that there are a lot of college students around, and there are plenty of places you can find a late night slice of pizza or a quick sandwich before class. But if you’re tired of on-campus options or the usual local spots, you can take a drive or public transportation out to nearby San Jose, or if you really want to be spoiled, San Francisco and its world-class restaurants.

Most of the suburbs of San Jose and San Francisco have some of the most expensive rental prices in the country. Palo Alto, where Stanford University is located, is no different. The average price for a two bedroom apartment is an alarming $3231 (yes, that’s per month). If you expand the search to ten miles of the university the price drops to an average cost of $2525 for a two bedroom, which is still really expensive. You can either check the listings every day and hope you can steal a bargain, try to find a roommate for a one bedroom or three others for a two bedroom, or adjust your budget accordingly.
