Sonoma State University, or SSU, was believed to have an extremely low crime rate in the quiet suburb of Rohnert Park, until a report was published in October 2012 to the shock of SSU students. Between 2008 and 2010, there were 19 sex offense cases. In these last three years, nine cases of sex offenses took place, nearly 100 drug-related arrests, and 100 alcohol-related were made, which considering the size of the population, is not a fairly large amount. However, the students were not happy this information came as a surprise, one female student reported to the local newspaper in regard to the newly-released statistics, that “this is really, really scary.” Another female student reported that she’d been followed before, and then “went out and bought some pepper spray.”

Just 56% of students go on to graduate from SSU. There is a high transfer rate. More women than men attend, with about 62% women and 38% men. The majority of students, 66%, reported they were Caucasian, 14% were Hispanic, and 5% were Asian. Nearly all students at SSU are from California, with less than 1.4% from out-of-state or a foreign country. Students are fairly engaged in Greek life, with 1 in 9 undergraduate men in a fraternity, and 1 in 20 undergraduate women in a sorority. Nearly all students, 98%, have cars on campus.
