Shasta College is an extremely safe area, with little to no crimes beside a handful of reported thefts a year. The crime rate is less than 0.05%, which is extremely low. With over 10,000 students, an average of 5 crimes a year is pretty exceptional. For Redding as a whole, the crime rate is actually pretty high. While Shasta College is a very safe place, Redding’s violent crime and property crime rate are both higher than the national average. The very different rates between Shasta College and the city of Redding may be due to some neighborhoods being much safer than others. The city’s center is the hub of crime, while the easternmost and southernmost areas of town have much lower crime rates.

Since Redding is the biggest city north of Sacramento, California, with around 90,000 residents, there are many people looking for jobs. There are not many places to work within town, and the unemployment rate is higher than the national average, at about 13% compared to the national average around 8%. Redding has been chronically struggling with its unemployment rate for quite some time. In 2009, it landed on the list of the 10 Jobless Cities in America when the unemployment rate reached nearly 17%. In December 2012, Mercy Medical Center in Redding, announced more layoffs in the months to come. For those wanting to move to Redding, it is highly recommended they have a job secured.
