About 8,000 students attend HSU, which means about half the population of the town of Arcata is made up of college students. Arcata is definitely a college town. The average age of an HSU student is one of the highest in the country: 26. About 52% of the students are White American, 22% are Hispanic American, 3% are Asian American, 1% are African American, and 0.3% are Native American. There are more women than men at HSU; 54% are female, 46% are male. Only 11% of students that go to HSU aren’t from California. The graduation rate is surprisingly low and only 14% or so will graduate in a four-year span. In Arcata as a whole, over 80% of the population is White.

There isn’t too much to do in the town of Arcata, though there are a few 21+ bars in a strip at the town’s center. Students throw house parties and hold bonfires on the beach occasionally. There is no public transportation after 7pm, so students are limited to local parties if they don’t have a car. Over 70% of students opt to walk to parties. There aren’t generally house parties during the week, and really good parties only happen every so often. HSU is more of a laid-back college experience for most. At the local bars, most students hit up Sidelines Sports Bar, which definitely qualifies as a college bar, and it can get really overcrowded and sloppy Thurs-Sat nights. Toby & Jack’s bar is a good option for an environment a little more laid-back.
