Crime & Safety

Crime & Safety

OCH Student Rentals - Property Manager

A glimpse at crime statistics in Fairbanks doesn’t tell the city’s complete story. You would probably expect crime to be low, but statistically it’s high. For students worried about safety, I would say don’t fret over it. The majority of crimes here are drug or alcohol related. When the cold winter sets in, people turn to substances and they end up getting in a lot of trouble for it. So, the only thing I have to say about safety concerns is that some bars don’t have the friendliest patrons; mostly locals who could act cold towards students (excuse the pun). Otherwise, I’d say this is a very safe community to live in.

Recreation

It always irks me when people say that Fairbanks is in the middle of nowhere. They don’t realize that being in the middle of such natural and untapped beauty isn’t nowhere, but rather somewhere very special. If you drive outside the city you’ll quickly end up in either a state forest, a wildlife refuge, a national park, or some other recreational area. I’ll go out on a limb and say that there isn’t a better school in America that gives you better access to nature or outdoor recreation. As for local things to do, Fairbanks is the second largest city in the state and has the same establishments that any other city does, like stores, restaurants, bars, and malls. I don’t think this location is made for every student, but those who like it will quickly love it.
