How to make things on a budget

Living on a (small) budget can be difficult, however, it can also be really fun if you know how to do it right. Finding deals and making your own furniture is always a great way to save on some extra cash. Also, frugal cooking habits are always important as well and will let you use that money towards a night out from time to time. Watch out Rach and Martha, there’s going to be a new group of frugal livers on the street.
When on the search for furniture it’s always smart to go to 1.) a thrift store 2.) Craigslist 3.) find hand me downs or 4.) find people that are throwing stuff out on the side of the street. After the furniture has been found is when the fun happens. Get out your scissors, fabrics and some sturdy nails, we have some projects to start.
These are the most fun to make because it’s possible to change the fabric as often as you would like. Also, it is much easier to clean the fabric on the “renovated” couch. First, go to a fabric store and buy a large enough piece of fabric to cover your couch plus an extra 2 feet on both sides, and about 30 furniture tacks. That’s it- well and the tacky couch that needs a face lift. From there, it’s pretty straight forward. Place the piece of fabric over your couch and tuck it into the cracks so the fabric is snug. Next, start placing the tacks so the fabric won’t move. I have drawn some diagrams to show you where to place the furniture tacks:
Coffee tables
The easiest way to make a coffee table is to find some cement blocks and place them as the leg of the table. Next, find any large flat or sturdy object, such as a piece of wood or glass. Then just drape another piece of fabric over the top. While at the fabric store buying the fabric for the couch, why not buy matching fabric for your coffee table and your couch- not the same fabric, but fabric that has similar colors.
Chairs can be made flab to fab in just minutes, and with only a small amount of work. Similar to furniture and the coffee tables, chairs can be made glamorous with pieces of fabric and ribbon and minimal sewing. First, find pieces of fabric that are appealing to you and that match your furniture. Then drape the fabric of the chair to cover the chairs.
Pictures and painting can be made easily. Take a couple of pictures of objects you like. You don’t have to be good at photography, you just have to find things that you like and take a few extra minutes positioning your camera so one straight line in the picture is in line with a side of the camera.  Now to frame the pictures. Great places to find cheap frames are Yard Sales, Salvation Army or Second hand shops, IKEA, WalMart and Target. It’s possible to find frames elsewhere, but these places are always the cheapest. Purchase different sizeframes so you can have a variety of big and small pictures to put up around your new place. Finally, go to Kinkos or anywhere else that prints out pictures and print your pictures.
