Information About the Area from our Experts
Restaurants
Sammie Leighton - Real Estate Agent
Milwaukee has great restaurants -- even famous chef Julia Childs thinks so. She came to the city for her 80th birthday to have the chef of one of Milwaukee’s best restaurants, Sanford, cook for her. Milwaukee is known as the “city of festivals,” and for food it’s no different. The city hosts “Zoo A La Carte” at the zoo, which, contrary to what you may be thinking, is not an event where guests can eat whichever animal they please. It is a festival where 27 excellent restaurants from around the area offer food to guests as they enjoy entertainment. Other ethnic festivals, like German Fest, Festa Italiana, and Summerfest feature authentic foreign cuisine. Festivals, restaurants, cafes... there is definitely a lot of great cuisine here in Milwaukee for residents to enjoy.
Renter Friendly
Sammie Leighton - Real Estate Agent
If you look at the housing market in Milwaukee, you will see that there are a disproportionate number of properties for rent, and for sale: there are nearly four times as many properties for rent (50% of the market) than for sale (13% of the market) here. This means that renters have many more options and variety when choosing a place than buyers do, and the market favors them. Currently, 51% of the housing units here are rented, and 44% are owned, but because of the one-sided market that I mentioned, this number will also grow more disproportionate soon.
Traffic & Commuting
Sammie Leighton - Real Estate Agent
Milwaukee ranked fourth best on Forbes’ 2010 list of the Best and Worst Cities for Commuters. This honor was partly because of the average commuting time for the area, which is a short 22 minutes. Despite limited public transportation options -- only buses and Amtrak trains serve the area -- and recent vetoes of future plans like light rail and high-speed rail, a good amount of people here take public transit. One out of every ten people use it, which is double the national average and nine times higher than the Wisconsin state average. The majority of people, however, drive a vehicle to work (82% of residents). Other people who live here take advantage of the city’s 65 miles of bicycle lanes and trails. Also, the city was named the 15th most walkable in the U.S. by Walk Score in 2011.
Recreation
Sammie Leighton - Real Estate Agent
There are over 15,000 acres of recreational space in Milwaukee that is split between more than 140 parks. Some of the most well-known parks in the city are the ones that make up the “Grand Necklace of Parks,” which has the same designer as Central Park. Lark Park, Riverside Park, and Washington Park make up this necklace. Milwaukee is known as the “City of Festivals,” and hosts state fairs, music festivals, ethnic festivals, food festivals, and more. There’s always something going on outside in Milwaukee, whether it be a festival in the city, a picnic in one of the parks, or a hike on one of the city’s trails.
