The overall crime rate in Fairfax is very low for the area and is much safer than the immediate suburbs of the Arlington area, making it a great place for renters that have families or may be worried about the higher crime rate near the city. The violent crime rate is about 70% below the national average and a little under 50% below the state average. The property crime rate is only about 20% below the national average, but this can be attributed to the affluent area and proximity to the city.
