In Austin, property renters and owners are split even, as they both occupy 48% of the housing units here. However, when it comes to homes and apartments on the market, renters have the upper hand -- of all the vacant housing units, 43% are for rent and only 18% are for sale. So, it’s much easier to find an apartment or condo to rent here than to buy a home. The city’s popularity is reaching record highs, and housing prices are going up. It’s best to rent here now, because in a few years properties will be even more expensive than they are today.

Even though Austin is a rapidly growing metropolitan area, the number of residents who drive vehicles to work, as opposed to public transit, are still overwhelming. 87.5% of residents drive to work, and only 3.4% take public transportation. New options are emerging, however, such as Car2Go, a car sharing program, and an expanding commuter rail system. Buses are also available, and the city is widely considered to be the most bike friendly city in Texas. It has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists for its efforts, and in the upcoming years more bike paths and routes will be installed. The average commuting time for people who live here is 25 minutes, which is similar to national and state averages.

The Travel Channel recently named Austin “America’s No. 1 College Town.” The most popular university in the city is the University of Texas--Austin, which enrolls around 50,000 total students annually. Additionally, there are about 30 other post-secondary institutions in Austin. The benefits to the city are evident: Austin ranks eighth nationwide for cities with the highest rates of bachelor’s degree attainment, as over 43 percent of residents over the age of 25 hold one. Also, Austin has the seventh-largest academic library in the U.S.

Austin’s nickname is the “Live Music Capital of the World,” thanks to the number of excellent venues and performers who live in the area. Stubb’s Bar-B-Q is a local favorite for its intimate stage setting inside, and its large stage outside. For a more formal concert experience, the Paramount Theatre for the Performing Arts and Bass Concert Hall are beautiful venues. Of course, the city offers much more than music, such as great bars, comedy clubs, lounges, and theaters. The city has so many fantastic options that cater to every age and style.
