Memphis has a reputation for being a city with high crime, as it has been ranked on the annual list of the most dangerous U.S. cities list in the past. However, crime fell from 2006 to 2009, and has maintained a steady downward trend. There is still a large crime problem, but hopefully the crime rate continues to drop in upcoming years. It’s important to look for properties with a real estate agent so they can tell you which neighborhoods are safer than others, and which areas to avoid.

Memphis is the third largest city in the Southeast, and is also one of the most inexpensive cities of its size. Here are the median rents of some of the largest Southeast cities: Jacksonville~$925, Charlotte~$1,036, Memphis~$800, Atlanta~$1,056, Miami~$882, and Raleigh~$1,071. As you can see, Memphis is the cheapest in that list, and is one of the most inexpensive large Southern cities overall. Now is the perfect time to rent here: in addition to the prices, out of all the housing properties on the market in the city, 53% are for rent and only 19% are for sale.

If you’re in Memphis, you’ll probably notice that the vast majority of residents drive vehicles, and only a minority of them take public transportation. If you observed this, the stats would back you up: 92% of residents drive a vehicle, and only 2.4% take public transit. Memphis has access to several interstates, such as 22, which connects the city to Birmingham, or 40 and 55, which bridge the city to Arkansas. The average one way commute to work for people who live here is 25 minutes, which is about the same as the state and nationwide rates.
Schools & Education

The public school system is currently undergoing authoritative change. The city’s education used to be run by Memphis City Schools, but that was recently disbanded, and the city’s schools will be merged with the Shelby County Schools district, which serves the suburbs, in the fall of 2013. This won’t be an easy task, as there are over 200 schools total in the Memphis City Schools district. As for post-secondary education, the city is home to around 30 colleges and universities, the most well-known being the University of Memphis.
