The city maintains over 50 parks and other green space throughout the city for the enjoyment of its residents. The most popular park is Falls Park which runs along the Big Sioux Rivers and features a beautiful green space by the amazing waterfall. The park also has a 16 miles biking, jogging, and walking trail that passes through the park and follows along the riverbed. During the winter many people snowshoe and cross country ski through the parks and along the river. Great Bear Recreation Park has skiing, snowboarding, and tubing during the winter and consists of three ski lifts and four trails for tubing.

The weather in Sioux Falls varies greatly throughout the year with hot and humid summers and cold, dry winters. The amount of snowfall during the winter months is less than most people think, with only about 40 inches per year which is much less than more northern parts of the state. The average high temperature during the summer is around 80-85°F and the low during the winter months is from 3-10°F. During the winter months there is very little sunlight and is considered a very low amount of sunlight for states in the US. Even during the summer the amount of sunlight can be low, sometimes causing for dark depressing days.
