Restaurants

Restaurants

Portland has 40 breweries, which is more than any city in the world. You can count on enjoying a great ale anywhere you eat, which complements Portland’s already-spectacular food. The Genoa is the best Italian restaurant in town, Chai Thai serves up delicious Thai dishes, Kin has a new American style and taste, and the Screen Door provides southern comfort in a region of the country that’s about as far from the south as you can get. As you can tell, the restaurant scene has many options, and if you get a beer with your meal, remember to order something local.

Public Transportation

Public Transportation

Kurt Seagle - Real Estate Agent

In Portland, many residents try to find ways besides driving to get to work. Nearly 13% take public transportation, such as buses, light rail, commuter rail, streetcars and car sharing. Another 8% ride bicycles to work, which is the highest percentage of residents in any major U.S. city, and is ten times the national average. The city has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists for its efforts to promote two-wheeled commuting. Taking alternative modes of transportation has been a huge trend here recently, and it looks like more people will get on board as transit options improve.

Crime & Safety

Crime & Safety

Portland has a crime rate that is much lower than the national average, compared with cities of the same size (250,000+ people). Out of all of the cities that are 250,000+, Portland ranks as one of the 25 safest, and in 2009 Forbes magazine named it the third safest city in the U.S. The chance that someone will be affected by a violent crime here is five per thousand, which is lower than normal. For property crime, it’s a bit higher, at 49 per thousand. Overall, Portland is a very safe city and a great place to start or raise a family.

Recreation

Recreation

Portland has over 10,000 acres of open natural space, including nearly 300 parks and open areas. One of the largest urban parks in the U.S. is Forest Park, which at 5,000 acres covers half of the open space in the city. There are also three Oregon state parks in Portland, the Tryon Creek State Natural Area, Williamette Stone State Heritage Site, and the Government Island State Recreation Area. In addition to all of this parkland, the city operates 13 community centers, 13 pools, both community art and music centers, and a staggering 220 miles of regional trails.
