Oklahoma City arguably has the best housing market out of any large U.S. City. Business Week named it one of the top ten strong housing markets in the U.S., and Bizjournals named it the most affordable. The median rent in OKC is $699, which is incredibly low not just for a large city, but for the U.S. in general -- it’s $251 less than the U.S. average of $950. It looks even cheaper compared to comparably-sized cities like Portland (median rent of $1,053) or Denver ($1,078). The city also has an economy that has prospered, even in tough times, and was named as one of CNN’s Best Cities to Find a Job (it was the largest) and Forbes called it the most recession-proof city in 2008. So, the city is growing larger but apartment prices are staying small, and are becoming more available. There are three times as many properties for rent than for sale on the market now. OKC is the perfect city to rent in, as prices are low and the value is high.
Traffic & Commuting
Brian Richardson - Real Estate Agent
Forbes Magazine named Oklahoma City as one of the best cities for commuters in 2010. Residents here have the third shortest commute time out of any U.S. city at only 21 minutes. They also scored in the top ten best cities traffic delay (meaning there isn’t much!). The ease of driving makes up for the fact that there aren’t many public transportation options here, besides buses and Amtrak. Less than 1% of the population here takes public transit to work, and 93% of them drive a vehicle.
Schools & Education
Brian Richardson - Real Estate Agent
There are around 30 post-secondary schools in OKC. Oklahoma State University’s main campus is located in the metropolitan area (the suburb of Norman), and also has campuses in the city. Oklahoma City Community College is the second largest of its type in the state, with almost 20,000 students enrolled. The city also private institutions (Oklahoma City University), religious schools (Oklahoma Christian University, Southern Nazarene University), and historically black schools (Langston University), to name a few different types of institutions. Overall, there there is a fairly substantial population of college students here.
Recreation
Brian Richardson - Real Estate Agent
Oklahoma City has nearly 22,000 acres of park land within city limits that the public can enjoy, and over a hundred parks. One of the most well-known recreational areas in the city is the Myriad Botanical Gardens, a 17-acre garden that’s located downtown. The city also has close access to the Oklahoma River, and with it the 13 miles of multiuse trails located on the north and south banks. In the winter when it’s too cold to go on a hike, go see the city’s professional basketball team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, or one of the city’s great museums, like the Oklahoma City Museum of Art or the Science Museum Oklahoma.
