Information About the Area from our Experts
Renter Friendly
Nita Gram - Real Estate Agent
Columbus is incredibly renter friendly, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering how much of a college city it is. In 2010, of all the vacant housing units in the city, 55% were up for rent, and only 17% for up for purchase. This means that the city has a much larger selection of housing for prospective renters than buyers. And, with a median rent of $881, which is nearly a hundred dollars less than the U.S. average, Columbus is affordable. It’s as good of a time now than ever to rent here.
Crime & Safety
Nita Gram - Real Estate Agent
When you think of the country’s safest metropolitan areas, the Columbus metro should be one of the first that come to mind. In 2011 it appeared on Parenting Magazine’s 2011 list of Best Cities for Families. The inner city area is more prone to higher crimes; the safer areas are more further out. A real estate agent can help you research and visit each neighborhood to ensure that you’re renting in a community that makes Columbus one of the safest areas for families.
Traffic & Commuting

Unfortunately, Columbus is the largest U.S. metropolitan area without local or intercity rails, although there are proposals to build them. Until then, most residents will drive a vehicle to work every day. Currently, 90% of them do. The two interstates that run through the city, 70 and 71, meet together in downtown Columbus, forming “the split,” which is the dreaded area where traffic is congested during rush hour traffic.
Schools & Education
Nita Gram - Real Estate Agent
It’s definitely fair to say that Columbus is a college city, as it’s home to the main campus of Ohio State University, which is the ninth largest college in the U.S. (by enrollment) with around 56,000 students. It was also ranked in the top 20 in U.S. News and World Report’s list of the best public universities in the U.S. Columbus State Community College, also in the city, adds another 30,000 students to the mix. Other smaller schools are also in Columbus, such as the Columbus College of Art and Design and Franklin University.
