Being just over the river, 9 miles from New York City, of course North Bergen must have a great supply of restaurants to keep people dining here. There are plenty to choose from in every category of food. However, if you’re looking for very fine dining / a dress code sort of place, you might be better off going into New York. The top two places for a special occasion or just a nice meal with some ambiance are La Fusta, which serves Argentine-style food, and Sabor, with Latin cuisine. Both are renowned for their steaks and sangria. For a little less money, you can also have a great, quality experience at DiPalmas Brothers (Italian), Tapas de Espana (Spanish), or the Coach House Diner (American). For a quick, cheap bite, two local favorites are Chicken Delight, serving chicken wings and the like, and Banana King Corp., serving fast Latin fare. There are plenty in between; starting with these will leave you lots more exploring in North Bergen.

There are several options for pet owners renting in North Bergen. Avalon North Bergen complex is luxurious and inexpensive for the area. The Stonehenge on The Palisades rents for an average price, around $1,500, but does require a $300 per pet one time fee. Half Moon Harbour Apartments are extremely lavish; more expensive but a great example of “you get what you pay for”. All three of those complexes allow pets of all sizes, so these are ideal for those with large dogs. Hudson Ridge Apartments, one of the least expensive rentals in the area, allow cats and small dogs, as does The Heights along with multiple private listings, all of which can be found on MyApartmentMap, using the advanced options to screen pet friendly places.

North Bergen Public School District serves students from prekindergarten through high school. The city has six public elementary schools: Franklin, John F. Kennedy, and Horace Mann schools serve students between grades 1 and 8; Robert Fulton and Mckinley schools include kindergarten, and Lincoln School extends to prekindergarten, all still continuing through eighth grade. North Bergen High School teaches all North Bergen students in grades 9 through 12, as well as students from Guttenberg, as per terms of a sending/receiving agreement the two districts have.
Recreation

The North Bergen Recreation Department sponsors sports and activities for children aged 5 to 16, including basketball for boys and girls, dance, wrestling, football, cheerleading, t-ball, baseball and softball. They also offer a summer fun camp for children of these ages, as well as various activities for all residents. One of the most interesting annual community events is the North Bergen Annual Hawaiian Pool Luau, held every August. The city also organizes community celebrations for holidays; a Veteran’s and Memorial Day celebration, Halloween and Christmas parties along with the annual Winterfest downtown celebration. Another interesting opportunity is the Night Out Against Crime block party evenings held throughout the downtown area. More specific information can be found at northbergen.org.
