Two major New Jersey highways run right through the city of Irvington. I-78 runs through the southeast corner, providing east and west entrance at exit 54, while the Garden State Parkway provides north and south access at exits 143 and 144. Irvington employs many taxi companies, the two most accessible being Red Top Taxi and Irvington Cab. New Jersey Transit’s Irvington Bus Terminal provides local service as well as service to Newark and Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

Irvington’s mission is to provide excellent housing to all residents, as well as increase and maintain quality of life. Their website makes it easy to access Section 8 tools, as well as a list of landlords accepting Section 8, and information on other available assistance, such as nutritional meal programs and maintenance and energy cost assistance. Based on information from the 2010 Census, the population of Irvington was 53,926. This made for a population density of 18,417 people per square mile. Of this densely populated township, 85% were reported as African American, 6% White, 1% Asian, 5% identifying as other, and 2% claiming 2 or more races. The ratio to females to males was 100 to 88. 28% of the population were married couples, 31% had children living with them, and 36% were considered non-families. 30% of residents were between the ages of 25 and 44, children under 18 years and those between 45 and 64 each made up 25%, 11% were between 18 and 24, and just 9% were over the age of 65. The median household income was reportedly $42,580. The per capita income for the city was $20,520, leaving 17% of the population below the poverty line.
