There are two train stations within Fair Lawn; the Radburn and Broadway stations, both on the Bergen County Line. Both stations provide service to Hoboken Terminal, with options to get connecting trains at Secaucus Junction to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan as well as most other New Jersey Transit lines. The Transit system also offers busses from Fair Lawn, with routes 144, 148, 160, 164, and 196 to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, routes 170 and 175 to the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal, and local service on routes 746, 758, and 770. Several main roads cross through Fair Lawn, making driving a relatively convenient option to travel in the area as well.

Fair Lawn Public Schools system serve students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The system consists of six elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth): J.A. Forest, Lyncrest, Milnes, Radburn, Warren Point, and Westmoreland. There are two middle schools (sixth through eighth) Memorial Middle School and Thomas Jefferson, and Fair Lawn High School for all high school students (ninth through twelfth). In the New Jersey Department of Education grouping, this system landed a GH rating, third highest out of eight possible groupings based on socioeconomic status. The school system has twice received the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education; the highest honor a school can receive. However, the last honor was in the 1997-98 school year.

Fair Lawn’s Recreation and Parks Department has organized a wide variety of activities for residents of all ages. The Fair Lawn Art Association, which welcomes all ages, holds workshops in all mediums of art, including oil paintings, pastel drawings, watercolors, and even drawing with a live model. There is also a Radio Club, offering training to obtain different radio licenses, attending festivals and getting field experience with radio stations. The Old Library Theater group puts on plays and performances year round, and welcomes all residents to audition or otherwise become a part of the presentation. Bridge club meets weekly, as does the Calorie Counters group, a weight loss support group where Fair Lawn Residents meet weekly to discuss recipes and successes. Fair Lawn offers sports for children including softball, baseball, basketball for boys and girls, lacrosse, soccer, track, volleyball, and wrestling. They also offer a bowling league for children, colorguard and twirling, and a summer basketball camp. For all ages there is also a table-tennis league, in-line skating classes, and a street hockey league (which Fair Lawn is famous for!). For adults, Fair Lawn has open gym basketball, open gym volleyball, competitive volleyball and softball as well as aerobics classes.
