Information About the Area from our Experts
Renter Friendly
Tanya Zachko - Real Estate Agent
Bayonne is extremely renter-friendly. In fact, renters make up 57% of the city’s population, which is almost double the average for New Jersey as well as most United States cities. When compared to seven surrounding cities, Bayonne is right in the middle in terms of rental rates. On average, a one-bedroom apartment costs around $1,100 monthly, around $1,400 for two bedrooms, and upward from there. Given it’s close proximity to New York City and Newark, these are excellent prices. For a renter who needs to commute, Bayonne is more than friendly.
Section 8 & Affordable
Tanya Zachko - Real Estate Agent
Bayonne does offer Section 8 to qualified residents through the Bayonne Housing Authority. MyApartmentMap has some options available for those interested, which can be accessed by selecting ‘show advanced options’ on the search bar, and turning on the Section 8 modifier. The Bayonne Housing Authority can be tricky to access online, but can be found at 30 Avenue C in Bayonne, or at (201)437-7135. The city offers other assistance programs such as the Home Improvement Program, offering grants for home repairs, Multi-Family Program, Affordable Housing Trust Fund, HOME, Balanced Housing Program, and various financing programs. All of this information can be found at bayonnenj.org/commdev2.
Schools & Education
Tanya Zachko - Real Estate Agent
Bayonne Board of Education serves students in grades kindergarten through twelve. The city has 10 regular public elementary schools serving grades k-8: Henry E. Harris, Dr.Walter F. Robinson, Lincoln Community, Phillip G. Vroom, Mary J. Donohoe, Horace Mann, Midtown Community, George Washington Community, and Woodrow Wilson, as well as the Nicholas Oresko School for students gifted in academics, arts, or athletics. Mary J. Donohoe School was named a Star School in the 2004/2005 school year; the highest honor by the New Jersey Department of Education, while the Nicholas Oresko School and George Washington Community School received the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence in 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, respectively. This is the highest honor given by the U.S. Department of Education. In 2006, Bayonne implemented uniforms (a collared shirt with logo, to be worn with optional other clothes), which has been heavily contested by students and parents. Bayonne High School is the only public school in New Jersey with an indoor ice rink for its hockey team, another source of pride for the city. There are also private schools in Bayonne, including All-Saints Catholic Academy for grades PreK-8, Holy Family Academy which is an all girls high school, as well as a co-ed high school, Marist High School. The city is also home to an Orthodox Jewish Yeshiva, Gedola of Bayonne.
Nightlife
Tanya Zachko - Real Estate Agent
Nightlife in Bayonne is a string of comfortable bars. Houlihan’s, SevenFortySeven, and the Big Apple are the most lounge-like, but are still just relaxed local watering holes. The Starting Point and Eddy’s are both typical “dive” bars; loved by locals, and enjoyable if you know what to expect. If you’re looking for something to get dressed up for, perhaps with a dance floor, you’ll have to leave Bayonne. Luckily, New York and Newark are both just under 10 miles away and public transportation is easily accessible.
