Public transit isn’t very popular here in Cary, NC, but new ways of commuting are emerging. Of course, there are traditional bus routes, with C-TRAN providing six of them, and train service to anywhere from NYC to Miami through Amtrak. However, there are newer ways of getting around too: Cary was one of a few select U.S. cities that earned the League of American Bicyclists’ first Bicycle-Friendly Community awards, largely for the community’s accommodations for bikers. U.S. Bicycle Route #1, which goes from Florida to Maine, and the N.C. Bicycle Route #2, from the “mountains to the sea,” pass through Cary. There are miles of paths and trails for bikers, and walkers have recently begun taking them too. These paths, along with the wide sidewalks, are perfect for walking around the city.

Not many people would disagree with me if I said that Cary is the safest city of its size in North Carolina, and one of the safest in the country. The crime report for the city from 2010 said that it was lower than national averages in violent and property crime (77% lower for violent, 50% for property). It also was lower than state averages (75% lower for violent, 59% for property). The low crime rate is just one of the reasons why Cary is an excellent place for families.
