Sally St. Clair - Real Estate Agent

In 2010, there were more renters in Minneapolis than homeowners. Of all the city’s housing units, 84,353 were rented and 81,442 were owned. In fact, nearly a fifth of the entire state of Minnesota’s rented properties are in just Minneapolis. Rent here is fairly inexpensive for such a large city -- it’s around $1000 for the average apartment, and prices vary in different neighborhoods, of course. Overall, Minneapolis is great for renters, with a lot of available apartments and prices that are cheaper than most other cities its size.

Traffic & Commuting

Traffic & Commuting

Half of the residents in Minneapolis work in the city, and even though most of them own cars, 60% of the 160,000 people who work in the downtown area commute by a form of transportation that’s not driving. Walking is a great option, as a 2011 Walk Score study rated Minneapolis as the ninth most walker friendly city in the country. Seven miles of pedestrian bridges, or skyways, form the Minneapolis Skyway System, which connects 80 blocks of downtown Minneapolis so walkers won’t have to deal with cars or the cold weather. Minneapolis also ranks second in the U.S. for the highest percentage of commuters that take bicycles, and in 2010 was named America’s top bicycling city by Bicycling Magazine.

Schools & Education

Schools & Education

For K-12 education, Minneapolis Public Schools is the largest district area, with 36,370 students enrolled. They service around a hundred public schools in the metropolitan area. Minnesota has an open enrollment statue where students can choose where they enroll in school, even if they’re not in the school’s jurisdiction. As for Minneapolis’ higher education, it is home to many public and private universities. The University of Minnesota, based in Minneapolis, is the eleventh-largest college in the U.S.

Recreation

Recreation

Minneapolis has one of the best recreational systems in the entire country. Overall, 16.6% of the city is parks, which is 770 square feet of parkland per resident, the highest in the nation. The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway surrounds the city, and provides 50 scenic miles of roads for bikers, joggers, and walkers. It also is host to the Chain of Lakes, which are seven lakes in Minneapolis that are open to the public, and it provides access to the Mississippi River. Runner’s World ranked Minneapolis the sixth best city for runners in the U.S. The city also is home to the most golfers, cyclists, sport fishermen, and snow skiers per capita. Minnesota is perfect for both urbanites who enjoy city life, and outdoor lovers who spend their free time exercising or exploring.
