Public Transportation

Bloomington is much further ahead in public transportation than any of its neighboring cities. It’s currently the only suburb in the south Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area to have access to the light rail transit system, which connects the city with downtown Minneapolis. The rail access was originally provided because Bloomington is home to the Mall of America, the largest shopping center in the country. However, the rail also serves residents who use it to go to work in Minneapolis every day, as well as those who want to spend their Friday or Saturday downtown. Bus routes are also provided in Bloomington by the Metro Transit.

Bloomington’s 16 public schools are operated by the Independent School District 271. There are eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. In 2006, the city’s first public charter school, Seven Hills Classic Academy, opened. Bloomington was also the home to the first online public high school, Mindquest, which ran from 1995 to 2003. There are three private schools in Bloomington, and three universities. Normandale Community College is the largest, with 13,000 students currently enrolled.
