Pontiac has a wealth of apartments to choose from; if you search MyApartmentMap for rentals in the area you’ll find pages and pages of them. The 2010 census reported that there were 10,901 owned units in Pontiac, and 9,712 rented units. This shows the popularity of renting here, and how the market is almost split evenly between owning and renting. Two buildings with residential space are currently being constructed downtown: 10 West Lofts, and the restoration of the Sears building. When these are completed, the number of new rentals in the area may hit triple digits. If you’re moving into the area I would suggest looking into those, but if not, there are plenty of rentals available.

The Pontiac area has struggled recently. As you may have guessed from the name, the city has had historical ties to the automotive industry, and was hit hard by the Recession a few years ago. Recovery hasn’t been easy. The last time I checked the unemployment rate (May 2012), It was around 21%, which was nearly three times worse than the national average. However, there has been initiatives for change. The old Sears building in downtown is currently being restored, which will be the largest construction project in Pontiac in the last three decades. There will be plenty of commercial space and jobs opening up, and many think it will be the spark that will put Pontiac back on the right track.
