Detroit’s foodie scene is excellent, and is probably best known for its acclaimed American restaurants. Cliff Bell’s is a local favorite, with great American food and live jazz music that embodies Detroit’s “Motown” spirit. Another popular downtown restaurant is the 24 Grille, which is open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The city also has a variety of other cuisines besides American, however. There are French, Italian, and Chinese restaurants, which should be expected, but also more exotic flavors like Ethiopian, Brazilian, and Moroccan too, which shows the diversity of the food you can get here.

Of the top 20 most populated U.S. cities (which Detroit ranks 18th), Detroit is the cheapest to rent an apartment in with a median rent of $690 in 2010. This is far less than the national average of $950, and is especially inexpensive compared to other Midwestern cities: Chicago’s median rent is $998, Columbus is $881, Milwaukee is $813, Minneapolis is $1,002, and Cincinnati is $733. It’s a great time to rent in Detroit right now, especially considering that of all the vacant housing units on the market, there are three times as many renting properties available than properties for sale.

Most people don’t know that Detroit has three border crossings with Canada, including the busiest crossing in the entire country (Ambassador Bridge). It’s just a few minutes drive from Detroit’s downtown area to Canada. Lake St. Clair is also a short drive away from the city, and is beautiful in the spring and summer. To commute to work, 85% of Detroiters drive a car every day. 8% take public transportation, which is double the national average. Public transit is available through buses, people movers, a commuter rail, and Amtrak.

Detroit has a thriving local and international nightlife. Detroit is one of the few cities in the country that offers access to another country (Canada) just minutes away. Many residents head to Windsor, a city in southern Ontario that’s just five miles from Detroit, and spend their night, or weekend, there. If you want to stay local, you can’t go wrong here either -- the city is home to four major professional sports franchises. It also has the second largest theater district in the U.S. The city’s excellent concert venues carry on the rich musical history of the city. The list goes on, but no matter what you choose to do, whether in the U.S. or over the border, you will always have activities to plan your weekend around.
