The Ellicott Mills Brewery is a small local brewery with the best draft selection in the area. Some local favorites are The Phoenix Emporium, a large pub, and the Cacao Lane Restaurant, which resides in a historic building. The historic district also has the Pure Wine Cafe, a location where people can sample wines and eat bistro style foods. Lastly, the Tea on the Tiber is a small tea parlor in the historic district, aiming to replicate an English Tea parlor.

Mount Hebron High School and Centennial High School, which received a 10 and 9 on the GreatSchools rating, respectively, are part of the Howard County Public School System, which was rated one of the ten most cost-efficient school systems in the United States. Howard High School, which received a GreatSchools rating of 10, serves the remainder of students that do not fall within the Howard County system. Bonnie Branch, Burleigh Manor, Ellicott Mills, Dunloggin, and Patapsco are all Middle Schools in the area that received GreatSchools Ratings of 9 or 10. All of the Elementary Schools in the area, including: Veterans, Bellows Spring, Centennial Lane, Ilchester, Hollifield, and Manor Woods, received scores of 8 or higher on the GreatSchools rating. Glenelg County School is a nonsectarian private school that serves students PK-12 grade and Children's Manor Montessori is the areas montessori school for grades PK-5.

Ellicott City has a large downtown historic district that is home to various museums, boutiques, coffee shops, and historic sites. The B&O Railroad Museum exhibits historic railroad equipment and has one of the largest railroad collections in the world. Tours of the historic areas around town are frequent and attract many tourists during the summer. The historic district is also a very popular location for antique shoppers.
