Information About the Area from our Experts
Restaurants
John Dean - Real Estate Agent
Cambridge is full of fantastic places to eat there is almost too many places to choose from. Since I am a pizza fanatic I think I should address this questions 1st. My top choice There are 2 places that stand above the rest - Armandos Pizza on Huron Avenue (right next to my office) and Gran Gusto on Sherman Street. If you are a pizza fan you should try a cheese pizza at both and then explore the other toppings types and speciality pies
Public Transportation
Gail McFaster - Real Estate Agent
Boston’s extensive public transportation system is one of the best in the country. Somerville is connected by the red line, with two stops (Davis and Porter). Porter is just five stops from Park St., where residents can access the green, red, orange, and silver lines. Only two stops after that is South Station, where residents can get off for the commuter rail, train, or bus service. Nearly 29% of Somerville residents take public transportation, which is more than 3x the state average and 6x the national average.
Pet Friendly
Gail McFaster - Real Estate Agent
Animal lovers will be glad to know that Cambridge is very pet friendly. There are many apartment properties that allow pets, such as Walden Park, Archstone CambridgePark, and Archstone Kendall Square. There are nine dog friendly parks in the city, and seven of them off-leash, so you’ll never have to worry about where to take your pup to exercise or play. Also in area are a number of pet stores, groomers, sitters, trainers, and veterinarians. Cambridge provides equal amenities for all of its residents, regardless of whether they have two legs of four.
Renter Friendly
Gail McFaster - Real Estate Agent
Cambridge is definitely a renter-dominated city: in 2010, 65% of the properties here were renter occupied units. This doubles the national average (30%), and comparatively, only 31% of the properties were owner occupied. Not only is the renting market great here, but the city is a great place to live. High-tech companies are moving into the area every year, creating jobs. Boston is just a short walk or T ride away. Because of the balance of students and academics here, there are both hip spots to hang out on the weekend, and great schools. Cambridge is a city that is growing rapidly, and has a very bright future.
Apartment Costs
John Dean - Real Estate Agent
2012 I think should be named the "Year of the Landlord" . Rents in Cambridge are up, some say they are up over 20% than the previous year and inventory seems to disappar as soon as it hits the market. Good quality apartments in close proximity to the T are commanding high rents. Do not be surprised to see studio apartments around $1400-$1500 and some rents up to $7,000. If you are new to an area make sure you work with a Realtor that specializes in rentals.
Schools & Education
Gail McFaster - Real Estate Agent
It’s common knowledge that Boston is one of the smartest cities in the country, and has received the top spot in “Smartest Cities in the U.S.” lists many times, including recently in rankings done by The Huffington Post (2012) and the Daily Beast (2010). Boston’s best schools, however, are located in Cambridge, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, Lesley University, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Also, at least 129 of 780 Nobel Prize Winners have worked with a university in Cambridge at one point. It’s undeniable that some of the nation’s finest and most prestigious schools are located here.
Recreation
Gail McFaster - Real Estate Agent
Cambridge’s nightlife thrives because of the city’s proximity to downtown Boston, and because the neighborhoods in Cambridge are flourishing right now. Spending your night in Boston is so easy here -- just take the T a few stops, or if it’s a warm night, you can walk over the Harvard or Longfellow Bridge. Once you’re there, enjoy one of Boston’s many sporting events, concert venues, or bars. If you want to stay in Cambridge, there are plenty of hip bars, restaurants, and clubs split between the Kenmore, Central, and Inman Squares. One of the best clubs is the Middle East, which is a top-notch music venue (with an upstairs and downstairs) and restaurant.
