Public transit has been an integral part of the city’s history. It has the oldest streetcar line in the country, and each of the cars has been named a historical landmark. You can’t say that you rode a historical landmark to work in many other cities! Buses are also serviced by the city’s RTA, and trains by Amtrak. More residents are also bicycling more than ever, and the city ranks 6th in percentage of bike commuters. Numerous bike paths have been added or restored recently, including almost 50 miles of bicycle routes.

The 2010 Housing Occupancy Statistics show that New Orleans is a very rent friendly city. It says that 51% of the occupied units in NO are rented, and comparatively 39% are owned. For vacant housing, 36% of the market is for rent and 10% is for sale. These stats show that not only is NO above the national average for occupied/available rental properties, but that there are far less properties that are owned. Because of Katrina, New Orleans had to rebuild, and like any other upstart city it’s growing very quickly. Now is a great time to rent, because as the city continues to flourish apartments will be more expensive and harder to come by.
