Lexington ranks very high in education amongst its residents: 13th in the U.S. for its literacy rate, named the tenth most educated US city by the US Census Bureau, and of residents older than 25, 22% have a bachelor’s degree and 11% have a master’s. Part of the educated population can be attributed to the city being home to the University of Kentucky, the largest university in the state, and Transylvania University, the oldest in the state.

In 2011 Forbes ranked Lexington fourth in the US for cities with the best businesses and careers. It has also been named one of the best cities for young professionals by Kiplinger.
