It’s not an exaggeration to say that Chicago is renowned worldwide for its incredible cuisine. It is home to Alinea, which Restaurant Magazine ranked the #5 in the world in 2011. It also has dozens of incredible pizza places where you can try anything from thin crust pizza to the city’s famous deep-dish pie. You should take the Chicago Pizza Tour, where you are taken to a few local favorite spots and sample the pizza at each place. Of course, Chicago is known for more than just pizza -- it has one of the most diverse and delicious restaurant scenes and, simply put, is foodie heaven.

Public Transportation

Public Transportation

Chicago has one of the most recognizable public transportation systems in the country, thanks to its famous “L” railway service. The Regional Transportation Authority operates public transit in the city, and along with the extensive L service, provides commuter rail service (second-most used in the U.S.), bus lines, and paratransit routes. Amtrak and Greyhound also service the area, and the city is one of the most walkable in the nation. A little over one in four residents use public transit to commute to work every day, which is one of the highest rates in the U.S.

In 2010, 53% of Chicago’s properties were rented, and only 41% were owned. This 53% is nearly double the U.S. average of renters in a city (30%). And, for a city that relies so much on renters, it has a fairly decent vacancy rate, meaning that there are a lot of properties to choose from when you’re picking a place. When you combine these housing stats with Chicago’s exciting city lifestyle and all the amenities it has to offer, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t rent here.

Recreation

Recreation

Chicago takes its motto “City in a Garden” to heart with its recreational scene. There are a staggering 552 public parks in the area (a staggering 7,300 acres), 33 beaches, 16 lagoons, ten wildlife gardens, and a number of museums. The city arguably has the best park system in the nation, or if it doesn’t now, it will in the near future -- there are constant beautification projects, and revitalizations of old parks as well births of new ones. Even though you’ll be living in one of the largest cities in the nation, you will still be able to keep in touch with nature here.
