Information About the Area from our Experts
Crime & Safety
Christopher Ames - Real Estate Agent
Miami doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to crime (they ranked #50 on Neighborhood Scouts 100 most dangerous cities in 2011), and it’s true; the city has a very high crime rate. In Miami Beach, the chance of falling victim to a violent crime is 1 in 100, and to a property crime, 1 in 10. The violent crime rate here is 125% higher than the national average, and 58% higher than the state average. For property crime, it’s higher than the national average by 79% and higher than Florida’s average by 42%. With that said, there are obviously safer neighborhoods than others. The safest Miami Beach neighborhoods are Bay Harbor Islands, Alton Road/Bay Road, Alton Road/Chase Ave, and Atlantic Heights.
Recreation
Christopher Ames - Real Estate Agent
This area is known, of course, for its beaches. You may have heard of Haulover Beach, which is North Miami Beach’s clothing optional beach. However, the city offers more than that. Their parks and recreation department runs two parks -- this might not seem like much, but one of them, Oleta River State Park, covers a whopping 1,043 acres, making it the largest urban park in the state. In this park, you can canoe down the Oleta River, ride your bicycle through miles of trails, have a picnic, go to the beach and swim, or observe wildlife. Also in the city are six community centers, and two renowned theaters, the Littman Theater and Gwen Margolis Ampitheater.
