Restaurants
Carmin Chance - Real Estate Agent
Have you ever been to a Turkish restaurant? How about a Scottish, Filipino, Peruvian, or Belgian restaurant? Unless you’re a die-hard foodie, you probably haven’t experienced all of these flavors. In Washington D.C., you can try them all. There are a variety of restaurants here, ranging from all the foreign cuisines I mentioned earlier to more familiar food like American, Italian, and Chinese. There is also a wide price range here, as you can experience an excellent dining experience for cheap, at a small cafe for example, or you can enjoy a four course meal at one of the city’s premier expensive restaurants where your favorite politicians eat. The options, both in terms of flavor and pricing, are vast here in DC, but one thing remains the same: the exceptional quality of the food.
Public Transportation
Carmin Chance - Real Estate Agent
Washington D.C.’s public transit system, run by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, has the second-highest ridership in the country, as nearly 40% of residents take public transportation to work every day. The services available are subway lines, buses, commuter rail, and Amtrak access. Additionally, Walk Score ranked D.C. as the seventh most walkable city in the U.S., and the city’s Capital Bikeshare is one of the largest bike sharing programs in the world with over 1,100 bicycles. The city’s public transit ridership is supposed to grow by 32% by 2030, so the city is currently spending a lot of time constructing new additions to the system and expanding coverage, which is always good for residents.
Renter Friendly
Carmin Chance - Real Estate Agent
Washington D.C. is absolutely renter friendly, as 55% of the housing units in D.C. are rented, and only 37% are owned. As for properties on the market, there are more than twice as many places for rent (36% of listings) than for sale (14.6). Renting in D.C. can be expensive or cheap depending on where you look, obviously, but on average it is less than you would expect compared to other large East Coast cities. The median rent for Washington D.C. is $1,078, which is less than Boston ($1,259 median rent) and NYC ($3,429 median rent).
Crime & Safety
Carmin Chance - Real Estate Agent
Washington DC’s reputation for high crime is slowly wearing off as the city’s crime rate has dropped. In 2011, the murder count was only 108, which was a fourth of what it was in 1991 (479), and the lowest it had been since 1963. Also, studies have found that over a quarter of the city’s crimes occur in 5% of the city’s blocks, meaning that the crime is very concentrated and not widespread. These blocks are mostly located in the eastern part of the city; the northwestern neighborhoods are generally the safest. However, communities considered dangerous, like Columbia Heights and Logan Circle, are being renovated and are becoming safer now than they ever have been before. Likewise, if you look north and east of downtown, crime is the lowest it’s been in years. Overall, if you look at the city’s crime stats, both violent and property crimes have been cut in half in the past 20 years.
Schools & Education
Carmin Chance - Real Estate Agent
Washington DC is home to many reputable colleges and universities, such as Georgetown University, American University, George Washington University, and Howard University as some examples. There are nearly 40 post-secondary schools in the city. As for K-12 education in DC, the District of Columbia Public Schools runs 123 public schools here, and there are around 46,000 students in this system.
Recreation
Carmin Chance - Real Estate Agent
There’s so much to do and see in Washington D.C. There are incredible historical sites, such as the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, U.S. Capitol Building, or the White House. There are museums like the National Archives, Smithsonian Institution, and the National Gallery of Art. It is home to a great art scene, which is exemplified in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Theatre, and the Arena Stage to name a few. The city also has professional teams in all four major sports, and over 7,000 acres of park land for recreation.
