Hartford is known around the country as the Insurance Capital of the U.S., and perhaps the world. The city has ties to Aetna, Travelers, Uniprise, the Lincoln National Corporation, the Hartford, the Phoenix Companies, and the Hartford Steam Boiler. Some of these companies are also founded and headquartered here. The unemployment rate here hit an all-time high at nearly 18% in January 2011, but has dropped since. As of April 2012 it was at 13%, which is still high, but looks to be steadily decreasing. It should also be noted that a study by the Brookings Institute found that Hartford has the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita out of any city in the entire world with $75,806.

The XL Center in Hartford features the city’s best nightlife. During college basketball season, the UConn Huskies play here part-time, and are always a sure bet to sell out the arena. There are concerts held at the XL as well, and famous names like Bruce Springsteen and Carrie Underwood have performed here. The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and the Comcast Theater are two other great venues. There are also a number of great bars in Hartford, as well as a handful of great clubs and lounges.
