Although only 22% of housing units in Thousand Oaks are designated for renters, that percentage accounts for over 10,000 units. The city contains many apartment complexes as well as houses and private apartments for rent. The median rent for Thousand Oaks is $1,650/month. This is on the higher end for the area, but not among the highest. Studio apartments begin at around $1,100/month, one bedrooms for $1,200, two bedrooms for around $1,500 and upward from there. Considering its low crime rate, easily accessible public transportation and proximity to Los Angeles, it is a great location for a commuting renter.

In 2010, statistics showed that the employment potential in Thousand Oaks was a very high 93,398, of which only 62,143 were occupied. The unemployment rate at this time was 4.3%, a percentage that is significantly lower than California as well as United States averages. Thousand Oaks was constructed as a “master planned city” by the Janss Investment Company, so its industrial opportunities were organized to match the population and provide positive results. Currently, the city is undergoing major renovations including expanding Route 23 to have 6 lanes, and revamping the shopping center to provide more stores and more jobs, as will the renovation of the entire downtown area. As Thousand Oaks is funded and planned by a large corporation, there will never be a shortage of developments nor job opportunities, and was named in 2006 Money magazine’s top 100 places to live.
