San Diego has some of the best Mexican restaurants in southern California, which shouldn’t be surprising considering how close it is to the border. Oscar’s Mexican Seafood is a local favorite, as is Las Cuatro Milpas, Tacos El Gordo 3, La Playa Taco Shop... the list goes on, but you get my point. This city is the go-to destination to satisfy a burrito, taco, or enchilada craving. However, the culinary scene is much more than just this, as there are many other great restaurants in town, serving everything from Seafood fresh from the Pacific Ocean to food from the Mediterranean.

San Diego has consistently been one of the safest large cities in the U.S. In 2004, it had the sixth lowest crime rate of similarly sized U.S. cities, and it ranked ninth on Forbes’ list of the safest U.S. cities in 2010. Large cities usually have much more crime than the average city, because there are more people. Despite this, San Diego stacks up well even against smaller cities, which is a testament to its safety.

San Diego is not a city known for its public transportation, as only 4% of residents take it to work every day. In stark contrast, 86% instead drive a vehicle to work. Because of this, there is a web of freeways and highways in the city. Interstates 5, 8, and 15 are accessible to the city, as are State Routes 94, 163, 52, 56, 75, and 905. Traffic can be hectic in this highway system sometimes, but the average commuting time (one way) for residents is 26 minutes, which is identical to the national average and a little less than the state average.

San Diego is one of the most intelligent cities in the U.S. -- an astounding 40% of residents here have earned bachelor’s degrees, making it the ninth most educated city in the country. The main reason behind this is the wealth of universities and colleges that are in San Diego. San Diego State University, University of California--San Diego, San Diego Community College District, and many others all serve the thousands of students that live in the city. As for K-12 schools, San Diego’s public schools average a 7 out of 10 on GreatSchools, a site that grades schools based on academic performance, which is a very excellent average for a large city.
