Renting an apartment in a Californian city is not usually cheap, but if you look at the price tags of apartments in Sacramento you will find them to be much less expensive than most of the cities in CA. The median rent for Sacramento changes by month, but right now it’s around $974. Comparatively, here are the median rents for other large cities in California: San Jose - $1,678, San Francisco - $1,646, Los Angeles - $1,088, Long Beach - $1,042, San Diego - $1,194, and Fresno - $815. Of these high profile cities, only Fresno is cheaper than Sacramento.

Sacramento is connected by two interstates and three highways for drivers. If you don’t have a car, the public transit system in the city is the ninth busiest in the U.S, and the Amtrak station is the seventh busiest. Despite this, only 4% of people who live here take public transportation to work every day -- driving definitely dominates the transit here, as this is how 87% of people in the city get to work. However, bicycling is becoming more popular because of the flat terrain and year round warm weather. The city was named a bicycle friendly city by the League of American Bicyclists because of its dedication to bike paths, especially on the American River Parkway.

Schools & Education

Schools & Education

The majority of kids in Sacramento (around 48,000 at the last estimate) are served by the Sacramento City Unified School District. There are also private schools, most of which being Catholic institutions, that allow you to enroll your children in any grade K-12. As for higher education, there are several public institutions, such as Sacramento State (28,000 students) and the Los Rio Community College District (71,000 students), as well as other private colleges and universities. There are nearly a hundred thousand students in just the two public schools I named, which shows that there are a fair share of students located in Sacramento’s metropolitan area.

There are a number of nighttime activities in Sacramento that will keep you from getting bored on the weekends. In the 60 miles between Sacramento and Napa Valley, there are 200 wineries. Sacramento Wine & Nightlife Tours offers opportunities to taste the best flavors, and provide transportation so you can taste as much as you want. Elsewhere in the city, the Sacramento Comedy Spot is a great place to spend an evening laughing, or spend it dancing at Firehouse 5 Dance. No matter what you feel like doing, Sacramento has a nightlife scene that will keep you entertained here.
