A 2007 study showed that one in every four Oakland residents commute through public transportation. This was before the gas spikes in the following year, so this statistic is probably even higher now. Oakland has its own public transportation agency called AC Transit that take them around their own city, as well as to places as far as the San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Oakland is also served by eight stations of the Bay Area Rapid Transit, and ferry service to San Francisco, Alameda, and Angel Island. In addition, Amtrak has two stops in Oakland. Wherever you need to go in the city, public transportation will take you there.

Though many people may not realize it, Oakland is the perfect city for a music-lover. The Paramount Theater hosts musical tours, as well as theatrical performances. The Fox Oakland Theatre is also popular, and is known for hosting bands and singers from a variety of musical genres. The Oracle Arena -- where the NBA’s Golden State Warriors play -- hosts concerts too, though not as often. Yoshi’s is a well-established jazz venue near Jack London Square. For those who are looking for a thrill besides music, this square is perfect. It has movie theaters, restaurants, and nightclubs. If you ever decide to spend a night on the town in Oakland, you won’t be disappointed.
