Fresno is the fifth largest city in California (by population), and is inexpensive compared to other large cities in the state. Here’s a list of the most populated cities in the state, in order of size, and their median rent: Los Angeles has a median rent of $1,088, San Diego is $1,194, San Jose is $1,678, San Francisco is $1,646, Fresno is $815, Sacramento is $974, Long Beach is $1,074, and Oakland is $1,129. As you can see, at $815, Fresno is by far the cheapest option of the eight largest California cities, and aside from Sacramento, is the only city on the list with a median rent of under $1000. It is also the only listed city with a median rent that is below the national average ($950).

Public transportation options in Fresno aren’t as plentiful as one would hope -- Amtrak provides rail service, the Fresno Area Express provides buses around the metropolitan area, and Greyhound offers long-distance bus routes. Only one out of every 50 residents takes public transportation to work every day. Contrarily, nine out of ten residents drive a vehicle to work. The average commuting time here is 24 minutes, which is five minutes less than the state average and two less than the national average.

There are four school districts that preside over public education in Fresno, the most prominent being the Fresno Unified School District. It is the fourth largest district in California with nearly 80,000 students. There around 40 public high schools in the city, and around 30 private schools. There are nearly 20 post-secondary schools of all types in Fresno. Out of these institutions, California State University--Fresno (21,000) and Fresno City College (30,000) have the largest student bodies.

If you’re looking for a place that offers you outdoor amenities in addition to a city life, Fresno is a great place to look into. The city is less than an hour away from Yosemite National Park, Sierra National Forest, Kings Canyon National Park, and is an hour and a half away from the Sequoia National Park. If you want to stay local, the city offers 1,500 acres of open space in nearly 80 parks where you can either bask in the year round sunshine, or cool down in the shade. Fresno also offers public access to a Japanese Garden, a zoo, a handful museums, and even underground gardens.
