El Cerrito has a reputation of being a dangerous city. This was especially true in the mid-2000s, when their crime rate doubled the national average in ‘05 and ‘06. Now, the criminal portrait of the city sends mixed messages. El Cerrito has improved drastically in certain categories, like motor vehicle theft risk, which in 2010 was twenty times safer than the national average. Robberies have also declined recently, as they only occur at half the rate of the average Californian city. Crimes such as assault, larceny, and murder are still issues for the city, but overall there’s a declining pattern, as the total crime risk for an individual is now lower than state and national averages.

El Cerrito residents have to commute longer to work (36 minutes, one way) than the average Californian (29 minutes) and American (26 minutes). Oakland is just 10 miles away, but traffic on Interstate 80 can significantly affect the commute on a busy day. To reach San Francisco, 16 miles away, El Cerrito residents have to cross the Bay Bridge, which is notorious for its backed up traffic. Fortunately, if residents want to avoid the stress of driving, there are a variety of public transportation services available, such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit, AC Transit, Amtrak stations in nearby Richmond and Berkeley, and All Nighter routes for late weekend nights.
