Violent crimes occur at a rate in Compton that is more than 3 times both the national and state average. A person’s chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime in this city are about 1 in 72. In particular, rates of homicide are higher here than in most cities in the country. However, between 2005 and 2010, homicide rates decreased by 67%. The city is making an effort to adjust its reputation for violence and corruption. The Compton Police Department was disbanded on suspicion of corruption, and the city is now served by the LA County Sheriff’s Department. The department has initiated plans such as the Gifts for Guns initiative, through which residents were paid for turning in guns to authorities. The unemployment rate in this city, in the same year, was 12%; double the national as well as state average. However, Compton has recently been referred to as a. “Entrepreneurial Hot Spot” by Cognetics, Inc., an independent economic research firm, when it made the list of best places in the country to start and grow a business. Compton’s Planning and Economic Development Department offers assistance programs for business owners, contributing and organizing various resources in order to build the city in terms of both reputation and stability. There are several headquarters of major retail chains in Compton, and the Alameda Corridor, which sees 25% of all waterway trades in the country, passes right through the city. In 2007, Gateway Towne Center opened, providing over 1,000 new jobs, bringing in business from other cities, and escalating the city’s tax revenue by 30%. There are many industries of all types in Compton, and economically it is becoming stronger and consistently offering more opportunity.
